A Leo club is formed and operated under the guidance of a sponsoring Lion club. The Leo clubs in the British Isles and Ireland can now be split into School Based Clubs (12-18yrs of age) and Community Clubs (14-28yrs). Whilst we all share the same name and strive to a common goal, helping others, we also have very distinct differences.
School Based Clubs
These clubs usually have a very large membership (up to 60 members) but also a high turnover due to the school setting. Most, but not all of these type of clubs are run from schools. Usually a guiding Lion attends in a lunchtime or afternoon meeting once a week. Because of the high membership, the club sub-divides into smaller teams to organise events to raise money. Although it is possible to have a president and other officers of these types of clubs, it is not always necessary. The guiding Lion/Club reports on the activities of the club and oversees the running of events by the groups. With any luck on leaving these clubs they can enter into a locally based community club.
These groups have a great power of fundraising and many can be nominated for other National Voluntary awards.
Community Clubs
Community clubs are run along the same principles as Lions clubs. Each club electing it's own officers as President, Secretary and Treasurer and hold meeting usually twice a month. A Lions club sponsors the Leo club and a Lion attends meetings as a Leo advisor. Events are planned, organised and run by the Leos requiring all members to help and gain new experiences from each of these challenges. The type of events carried out can vary tremendously depending on the clubs members and where they're based. The clubs also hold social activities inviting other Leo clubs to attend an d interact, the events can and often do also incorporate fundraising or welfare activities.
LEOs Overall
Leos are a group of dedicated, enthusiastic and energetic young people allowing it's members to help others and raise money by giving up a little of their time. The overall scope of Leos allows members to experience and enjoy meeting others and gaining new friends whilst sharing a common interests and goal. Leos encourages young people to gain confidence and experience by having responsible fun with a purpose.
LEOs not only stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity but Let's Enjoy Ourselves as well, and the Leos of MD105 make both these principles work to the fullest.
