ALWAYS REMEMBER:
You never get anything for FREE, without limited functionality. Protection for your computer is important, as is backing up your hard drive regularly, in case of either a virus attack or hard drive failure.
There suggest that if you don't already have a DVD writer, Tape Drive (I have several of these in operation) or some method to back up your files, you WILL wish you had, one day. As it is never 'if your hard drive fails, it is when'
Make sure that you get your system protected from occurences of malware (malicious software - viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.) problems. Here are some simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection.
Always ensure that you regularly visit our Downloads page, for additional software available and to obtain the files below.
1. Visit Windows Update: Ensure that you have ALL the critical updates for your operating system and Internet Explorer. The first defense against infection is a properly patched operating system.
a. Windows Update - do this at least once a month: Windows Update. Windows Update can be set to automatically download Microsoft Windows updates in many of the more recent operating systems.
b. Never add ANY sites to your 'Trusted Sites Zone'.
2. Anti-Virus: Make sure you have one and KEEP IT UPDATED. Here are some free ones:
You should remember that Windows XP has it's own basic firewall (make sure that it is switched on if you wish to use it), but it is recommemnded that you switch off the Windows XP firewall and use one of these firewalls listed. Like Antivirus software you should use ONLY ONE firewall.
3. Get a Temp File/Cookies/Index.dat cleaner
4. Spyware Prevention: These prevent/block. They are NOT scanners. Scanners are listed further on.
SpyWare Blaster
SpyWare Guard
5. Adjust ActiveX security settings
In Internet Explorer, click Tools/Internet Options/Security. Click on the Internet globe. Then select 'Default Level', then click OK. Now select 'Custom Level' and scroll down to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section (some may already be set correctly):
- Set 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to prompt
- Set 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to disable
- Set 'Initialise and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to disable
- Set 'installation of desktop items' to prompt
- Set 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to prompt
- Set 'Navigate sub-frames across the different domains' to prompt
Click OK and OK again
6. Additional Important steps: Consider using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer
or the first major browser with a great deal of experience; Netscape.
Netscape is still the most popular browser in the world for business, Internet Explorer is only the
No 1 in the UK for home users.
