Lions Clubs International Legal Role

The MD Legal Adviser, like all MD officers, is a volunteer. By necessity the officer must be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister. The officer's role is to provide both general guidance on matters of law that affect the Lions organisation, individual members and clubs and also to provide specific advice in answer to queries raised. Advice is given to MD Council of Governors, other MD and District Officers, clubs and individual Lions. Whilst not specifically responsible for Constitutional matters, a good working knowledge of the International Constitution and MD Constitution is essential in providing advice. The Officer also assists in drafting or approving documentation required by MD Council of Governors and other MD officers.

A frequent problem when advising clubs is the lack of relevant detail in writing. All clubs should whenever possible, particularly when dealing with outside organisations, ensure that they confirm all arrangements and agreements in writing to prevent the "I said You said" contractual difficulty that all too often arises. You may well have utmost faith and trust in the person you are dealing with, but innocent misunderstandings can and do arise.
