Music competition winner 2010

Following our European success with violinist Sophie Rosa in 2008 and with last year’s Multiple District winner Stephen Sykes coming fourth in Tampere, against some very stiff opposition with the trombone, the scene was set once again on the 18th April in Birmingham at the Conservatoire to find the young musician who would represent us in Bologna, Italy, on 4th to 6th November in the European finals playing the classical guitar.

This year's winner was Laura Snowden from East Grinstead, West Sussex, sponsored by the Caterham, Oxted and Godstone Lions Club of District 105SE.

Second was Daniel Bovey, sponsored by the Gillingham Mere and Shaftsbury Lions Club and third was Matthew Wilkinson, sponsored by the Huddersfield Lions Club.

The picture shows Laura being presented with the Ian Jones Memorial Trophy by Lion Elizabeth Jones, the wife of Past District Governor Ian Jones (2001-2002) one of the earliest stalwarts of the MD105 Music Competition. They are flanked by competition judges, (left to right), Helen Sanderson, Mark Eden (chairman) and Joanne Sealey..

Time moves exceeding fast and we are already on the look out for candidates for the 2011 competition. The instrument is the oboe and the list of music to be played is shown here. Candidates must play the ‘Imposed Piece’ and one other piece to be selected from the ‘Repertoire list’.

It would be a huge boost in this next year if we could have a candidate from all 13 Districts in the British Isles and Ireland.
