Use encryption to safeguard personal data
There is no explicit obligation under the Data Protection Act (DPA) to use encryption to safeguard personal data, although the 7th principle of the act stipulates that “appropriate technical measures” should be taken. This could be interpreted as referring to encryption, which is increasingly used to protect digital information, from personal details held on a computer to financial details transmitted over the Internet.
The United Kingdom Deputy Information Commissioner has stated that “Where personal information is involved, password protection for portable devices is simply not enough”. The Council of Governors have agreed that all Council, Multiple District & District Officers and MDHQ personnel that store any personal/sensitive information should encrypt their laptop/desktop hard drive, external USB hard drive, USB memory sticks, flash drives, etc.
