LIBRA is the ‘Lions International Blood Research Appeal’ and was founded in 1976. Our aim is to raise funds for the Haematology Department at King’s College Hospital, covering the cost of diagnostic equipment. The specialist machinery is used by the blood research team to develop new treatments for patients in the UK and around the world. We are currently working on our Acorns to Oaks Appeal, launched with King’s in 2007, and calling on supporters to help us raise £249,000 towards three new pieces of equipment. We are just £36,000 away from reaching our goal and with your help we hope to provide King’s with the funds in 2012.

Professor Ghulam Mufti who heads up the Department of Haematology at King’s keeps us

updated on progress within his team and funding requirements. He is world renowned for treating patients with leukaemia and blood cancer. We also have strong connections with other health care professionals at the hospital who help diagnose and treat a variety of degenerative diseases. They are busy developing treatments for blood disorders, Liver disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Sickle Cell disease and Diabetes. The unit also has the largest bone marrow transplant programme in the UK and is recognised on a global scale.

Professor Ghulam Mufti commented: “We rely on support from LIBRA as we always need the latest equipment to move our research and development forward. The equipment that LIBRA is funding will greatly benefit our research teams and ensure that we are able to diagnose serious conditions swiftly. In turn, this will enable us to establish how best to treat patients.”

Anwar Alhaq, Divisional Manager at King’s College Hospital, added: "LIBRA has provided wonderful support to King’s over many years and this has helped to establish a Haematology Department that excels in clinical, diagnostics and research and development. It’s now recognised internationally as a centre of excellence. That’s quite an achievement for any charity!"

Going forward, a new Clinical Research Facility is being developed at King’s and we have been asked to provide funds to cover the costs of equipment. It will become home to the Haematology Department in the near future and also bring together other vital departments including Diabetes Research, Hepatocyte Transplantation, Cardiology and Neurosciences. The new facility will allow professors and their teams to work cohesively under one roof.
